Oppenheimer continues to sweep this awards season, and managed to break the Dante Awards nomination record (previously held by 4 time DA winner Babylon), gaining a whopping 14 nominations. Christopher Nolan’s three hour epic earned Nolan’s first ever nomination in the best director category, after previously contending for his work on Tenet.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ sexual fantasy Poor Things grabbed an impressive 12 nods in categories such as best supporting actor (Mark Ruffalo), best actress (Emma Stone), best director (Yorgos Lanthimos), and best picture (Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Emma Stone).
Barbie surprised everyone this morning, missing multiple predicted nominations. The biggest disappointment of all was the film’s failure to secure a best picture nomination. Greta Gerwig was projected to receive her first best director nomination, but was shockingly missed for films like Anatomy of a Fall, and The Zone of Interest. However, Barbie did not walk away empty handed; it got nominations.
The previous lineup for best picture caused controversy for its lack of international films. However, two international pictures secured themselves a spot in the best picture category, along with best director and best screenplay (adapted and original, respectively). Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest successfully showed up in a multitude of categories, with Zone managing to be the 3rd most nominated film of the year.
