As the 2026 awards season continues its path, the Dante Awards have officially announced this year’s batch of nominees. However, the lineup in every category this year was a slight bit different, as this was the first year with the implementation of the Dante Awards Committee. The committee created a voting body of new and inspired members, which directly influenced and chose a handful of nominations. The introduction of the committee has brought us many surprises and picks that have kept the pool of nominees unique and exciting.

Continuing its successful run, “Sinners” has now become the most nominated film in Dante Awards history, hitting a milestone of 16 nominations. These nominations include: Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Supporting Actor (Miles Caton & Delroy Lindo), Ensemble, Casting, Scene in a Major Motion Picture, Editing, Sound, Production Design, Costume Design, Visual Effects, Makeup & Hairstyling, and Choreography & Stunts. The previous record was held by 2024’s “Oppenheimer,” with 14 nominations.

The 2026 Best Picture lineup saw a historic number, which has solidified broken barriers between Hollywood and foreign cinema. The production company Neon became the first studio to get four films into the lineup with “It Was Just an Accident,” “No Other Choice,” “The Secret Agent,” and “Sentimental Value.” Coincidentally, those 4 films mark the most international films in Best Picture ever. This creates a fascinating race in the International Feature category, showing as over half of the nominees are also nominated for Best Picture. Another international film distributed by Neon, “Sirāt,” found its place in categories outside of International Feature, but it mysteriously found itself absent from the International Feature 5.

It was a big year for familiar faces, as we saw many returning nominees. In the Leading Actress 5, we saw the return of both Jessie Buckely and Renate Reinsve- previous winners of the award. In Original Score, previous winners Ludwig Görannsson and Jonny Greenwood battle it out as a part of some of the most nominated films of the year (“Sinners” and “One Battle After Another,” respectively). Alongside them, Jerskin Fendrix is another returning contender in Original Score for his work in “Bugonia.”

Looking at some surprises, films such as “Frankenstein” and “Hamnet” shockingly missed the Best Picture lineup, despite receiving accolades in multiple areas. “Hamnet” star, Jacobi Jupe, received his first nomination for Best Supporting Actor, making him one of the youngest nominees in Dante Awards history. Chloé Zhao, a previous director nominee, was notably absent in the director lineup, but found success in the Adapted Screenplay category.
